Chan Heng Yi (laptop)

This is an Acer Aspire 5920. It is useful as it is a portable computer. This computer can be brought outdoors without as it is light.


This laptop consists of many small parts within the laptop. It mainly consists of tiny resistors and other components. A hard-disc is also present within the computer to store content.


The covering of this laptop is made of metal as it is light and not brittle so it does not break easily. The laptop also consists of an LCD screen for clear viewing. The keyboard is for typing and there is a small pad, which acts as a mouse to scroll the mouse around the screen. The laptop is coated with coloured plastic to make it look sleek and stylish.


The targetted user for this product would be from teenagers to adults. This product is suitable for teenagers as laptops are important for studies such as projects, or other things such as E-Learning. It is also suitable for adults as they can use the laptop for buisness purposes.


The cost of the product is reasonable. It may cost over a thousand dollars but it is cheap if the price of other laptops are compared with it. It is also reasonable considering the good functions. Technology is advancing very fast. In the future, there might be computers that far exceeds a human mind... That costs less then a hundred dollars!

Leong Jia Ming (Playstation Portable (PSP))

This is a Sony Playstation Portable (PSP). Its main function is to bring entertainment to people away from their homes. It could store musics in most formates, videos in Mp4 formate, pictures and even games in its memory stick Duo. It has a openable casing which enable people to put their Universal Media Disc (UMD) to play games, musics and vedios. It is design in a way that there are 2 hums on the back of the Psp so that it fits the shape of your hands when you hold the PSP for a better grip. It had been design as the last 2 design, the Playstation 1 and Playstation 2 were very attractive but not portable. The edges of the Psp are curved as it would be safer to use.

The PSP's casing is made of plastic as it is durable and easily decorated. It could be decorated by skins which are made to stick on them and form pictures, colours and even words. (Shown on the back of the PSP picture) The internal parts are metals and circuit borads that enables the system in the PSP to work.

I think that this product is made of plastic as it is durable, easily bendable when heated and would not damage the surrounding or the user easily. This material is also coated with different colours so that it could attract more people.

The target group of this product would be people above 10 years old. As it is not very complicated to use it and even the older age people could use it to entertain themselves when there bored or so. It have a good appearence and cost arround $200 too $300. Therefor, an average income adult could afford it.

I think that the PSP is a very useful device. It could entertain people with many of its functions. It even have a Wifi to enable people to connect to the internet or connect with another PSP to play a multi-player game. You are also able to store as many stuff as you want just by changing another memory stick Duo and you can store more. The memory stick Duo is also used in some handphones, so you could not only use it in the PSP but also in the handphone.

This PSP is the most heavy and big in size. It have a smaller version called the Playstation Portable Slim (PSP Slim). The function are basically the same but it uses lesser energy and is much more lighter.

I think that the PSP's Wifi is not far enough in range and is weak sometimes. It would be much better if they impove the Wifi.

Qin Ta (Table Lamp)

This is a table lamp. the main function of it is to light up the table so that the person can see what he is doing on the table at night without switching on a bright light as it might be considered glaring to the eyes.

It is made up of a shade, a light bulb and some sticks attached to the shade. The purpose of the shade is to prevent the light from being glaring as it is easier to work in a dim lighting at night than with a bright light glaring into your eyes. The purpose of the light bulb is to produce light so that the user can see at night. The purpose of the sticks is to stabilise the lamp and prevent it from falling over and rolling about.

I think the material used for making the shade and the sticks is a translucent plastic as the shade have to be translucent. Metal is not a good material used as a shade because it might be in contact with the wires and electrocute the user. Cloths are also not good for making this shade because it is not rigid enough to have the sticks attached to it. If cloth or metal is used, using the lamp will be hazardous to the user.

I think that the target users will be the wealthy teenagers and businessmen as this product cost at around $185 USD. The product will attract teenagers because they prefer to be trendy and want the coolest items on the market and they do not like to work in the bright light and prefer working in a dimmed lighting. The product will attract businessmen because although the product is expensive, it saves electricity which in turn cost money, therefore they would be working in a comfortable environment while saving money.

The selling point in this product is most probably the design because it looks unique. As with the teenagers, the newer generations prefer to go for things that look good rather than things that are cheaper and just as useful. Therefore there will be more youngsters buying it than adults as it starts turning trendy.

Yi Han (Ipod Classic)

This is an Ipod Classic from Apple. Its main function is to store music, videos, podcasts and photos. It has a memory space of 160GB which is able to hold thousands of songs at the same time and it comes in two different colours, white and black.It is able to support many file formats such as MP3, AAC/M4A, WAV, which are for songs, JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF and PNG for images. It has a rectangular design and its corners are curved to prevent the user from inflicting any minor injuries.

The parts used to make this Ipod is mostly metal (aluminium) and the "wheel" is made from rubber and its screen is made from plastic. Its iternal parts are made from selected metals chosen for their respective properties such as insulators and heat conducting. Its cover is made out of aluminium to prevent the Ipod from being scratched easily and cracked when dropped. The screen of the Ipod is made from plastic as it doesn't crack when dropped and is water proof. The "wheel" is made from synthetic rubber giving it a smooth surface and makes it easier for its user to navigate around the Ipod.

The target group for this product would probably be teenagers and adults. It is quite costly amade from quality materials and have a s it is large storing capacity which make file transfering much more convenient. It has a cool appearance which attracts people to purchase it.

An Ipod is quite costly as it is one of the few MP3 players that is able to support that many file formats and has the largest storing capacity. It is worth the price as not only can it be used as a MP3 but also a MP4 and a hard drive to store important files.

The product should be smaller in size and diameter as its width is 13.5mm which is approximately 1.5cm. It may cause inconvinience to carry it around without a bag as it may be to large to fit in a pocket.

Zhan Rui (Microsoft lazer mouse)

This is the latest Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 8000.The function of the mouse is to help navigate through the computer's different functions and software.It uses the latest laser n wireless technology.It comes in a sleek, symmetrical design featuring authentic brushed aluminum that feels as good as it looks.

The main parts used to make the mouse is plastic and rubber.The basic features of the mouse are a casing with a flat bottom; two buttons on the top; a laser multi directional detection device on the bottom; and a hardware in the mouse enabling it to sent the information back to the computer instantly.

Plastic is used as it is light, durable and can be moulded into different shapes allowing the hand to be place on it comfortably.The mouse and the scroller is covered in a thin layer of synthetic rubber giving it maximum comfort.

I feel that the target group of this product would most probably be adults and not for home users as it it is quite expensive.I think adults who give talks and presentation would buy this mouse as appearance matters most.

The cost of this mouse does not come cheap.It is one of the few high end mouse that Microsoft have came out with.I think the it would be a good buy as it has quite good quality, design and it is also topped off with the latest technology in the market.

Wei Jie's BlueTooth

This is a bluetooth. Its used for Talking to other people without having to hold the phone.

This bluetooth have many small electronic parts in it. The outer parts are mainly for the earholder so that the bluetooth will fit into the ear and the user would be able to hear. And the microphone where the user speaks into so the other party would be able to hear crystal clear voice of the user.

Its made of Plastic covering so it would not be easily damaged when dropped. And the covering is water proof for protection against water.

The targetted user for this product would be from teenagers to adults. As teenagers wants to be hip and cool, they buy this for showoff. And as for the adults, while driving their cars, they can use this bluetooth to communicate without getting caught by the traffic police.

The cost for this product isn't that costly and isn't so cheap either. Its at the right affordable price for both teenagers and adults. There are also many types of colours of this bluetooth for people to choose their favourite colour from. In the future, perhaps there would be bluetooth even 10 times smaller than what you see in the picture. That is of course.. perhaps.

Jie Chi (Sports Car)

This is a car. the function of cars is to transport people from place to place in a shorter time than to walk, saving alots of time for travelling from one end of a country to another.

The car has many parts in it. Car seats are for the passengers to sit in car. The sterring wheel of the car controls the car to move in the direction of the car. The enginee of the car is a motor with many sofisticated parts in it to allow the car to work. Headlights of the car is used to light up the path of the car especially at night as the street lamps are not bright enough.

The chassis of the car is made of hard metal, so as to protect it from objects hitting the people in the car or entering the engine and causing the car to spoil. The wheel is made up of rubber with grid lines to increase friction against the ground to have a better handling of the car. The windows of the car is made up of polycarbonate, as the material does not shatter easily and can withstand a sudden shock without breaking.

The target user of this product are adults, especially businessman as they need to rush for meetings for work. Other people use cars to bring their families out to play when their free, visit friends and relatives that live rather far. Some people own a car as they do not like to take public transports like MRT, buses to work as at those times, public transports are usually packed with people, and if they miss the public transport, they have to wait quite a while for the next train or bus that goes to their destination. Cars can bring people from door to door of places, which are much better than public transports as they stop at a specific place and you would have to walk to your destination, and it would be fustrating to walk in the rain, or to carry lots of things from the supermarket all the way home.

The cost of the product is costly and have a big range, as theres different type of engines, and different type of cars like 2 seater, 7 seater, 5 seater. The number of people that can board the car determines the amount of material needed for the car and the cost. The cost of the car will increase if you were to add parts of a car like better wheels, engine, spoilers, neon tubes and much more. The cost of cars is predicted to rise in the future as technology is advancing and the picture above is an example of future cars, with doors that open upwards.

Chee Yu (Hard Disk Cooler)

This Vizo Orbital, a circular HDD cooler is able to provide PC users an incredible variety of “Do It Yourself” products. The parts of the product are the fan and the fan-holder. Vizo Orbital looks like a UFO with the cold blue LED light which can give you cool and fabulous feeling and make your computer have a gorgeous look.

This design is to decorate you PC and single fan provides the maximum airflow and pressure which will be able to reduce hard disk drive temperature and protect the hard disk.

I think this product is make of plastic because this will allow the blue LED light to pass through to the fan that enable it to have a gorgeous look. Plastic can be moulded into different kind of shapes which enable it to fit into the hard disk. The purpose of this product is to reduce temperature of the hard disk and enable to user to fix the Vizo Orbital easily into the hard disk as it is a “Do It Yourself” products. It should be made in plastic because plastic is light and durable.

The target user are business man or adult. Business man had a lot documents needed to store in their computer and they need to buy external hard disk in order to have sufficient space to store their documents. It will be useful when the business man need Vizo Orbital to cool down their external hard disk and protect them.

The price of the product isn't that costly. It is an affordable price for all the business man and adult. Since it is a “Do It Yourself” products, it will not be very expensive. And there is different types of colours for the fan.

Launch of the Designerly Technologists

Welcome to the Launch of the Designerly Technologists' blog.
This is a new milestone of our school's Upper Sec DnT course which marks a new beginning as we are heading into the Age of Technology.
As we are known as the CoE of ICT, it is natural for the DnT coursework to be progressing in this direction.
We certainly hope that everyone of you will put up nice comments and great designers' thought and inputs into the blog for sharing and learning as a whole.
